The Sixth of June

Today we are relaunching the Essex and Orange 1773 website. We chose June 6th because of two  important dates in American history that are very similar to each other and similar to us in regard to what we want to do here at E&O. June 6th was the day Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale was born. The other June 6th date was D-day when the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II.

Nathan Hale is most noted for his purported last words before he was hung by the British in  September 22, 1776 at the age of 22. He volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission in New York City but was captured by the British and hanged. Those famous last words were noted by some as:

I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.

By all accounts of those who were there at his hanging or those who reported of his hanging, Nathan Hale did indeed eloquently express himself moments before his death. The popular last words of this great American patriot are likely a shortened version of the following, which is also reported:

I am so satisfied with the cause in which I have engaged that my only regret is that I have not more lives than one to offer in its service.

Or if Hale did not give the famous quote, it is possible he instead repeated a passage from Joseph Addison’s play Cato, to which was an inspiration to the many American Whigs of 1776, who fought for independence.  Hale was quite familiar with the Whigs of 1776, as they were a widely recognized label of choice for people who identified as opposing tyranny:

How beautiful is death, when earn’d by virtue!
Who would not be that youth? What pity is it

That we can die but once to serve our country.

Then there is D-Day.  Another fight against tyranny 168 years later.  June 6th 1944 is the day that the tide turned against Hitler, Germany and her allies.

The following is Dwight Eisenhower’s the speech to the troops  just prior to the invasion. When reading it, think about the tyranny that the American soldiers were fighting against and the threat they felt towards the country they loved. Think about much you love America and think about your role today  as a fighter of tyranny.

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive hasseriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

General Eisenhower could be speaking to today’s Americans.

There is an enemy out there.  “Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.”  We all know how savagely they fight and how well trained they are. They are just as dangerous to the survival of America as the British Crown was in 1776 and Hitler and the Nazis were in 1942.  To name a few, we are talking about the Communists, Socialists, Progressives and those who who are looking to take down America from within. They are looking for that same “fundamental transformation” that Barack Obama spoke of in 2008. A transformation that will be a place void of God, Christianity, guns to protect ourselves from tyranny is all forms, and a place no longer affording the freedoms granted us by our Founders.

If you don’t think we are about to lose America to these inside and outside groups trying to take her down, then you have been watching too much reality TV or watching too much unreality TV like MSNBC – the news station representing the very groups wanting to fundamentally transform the United States of America.

It is time for us to awaken to the threats. It is time to awaken others. And just like Nathan Hale and the brave Americans on the beach of Normandy, we must do all we can to fight the tyranny that threatens  our American way of life. We must find our place in this new Revolutionary Army and be willing to sacrifice every thing we have in order to make sure the next generations continue to enjoy the freedoms  that were handed down to us by the those who sacrificed everything, including their lives, to make sure we were free and stayed free.

So, on this day sixth day of June, in order to honor America’s past heroes and patriots who gave their lives to fight against tyranny and the fight for freedom, what are you going to give up in order to get involved in this fight for the heart and soul of America? Shut off the television set and figure out how you can to make a difference. Find your courage and reignite your devotion to the America you love and hold dear.

It is time for us all to bring out the Nathan Hales and Normandy Beach heroes that are in each and every one of us. It is time to rededicate our firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, and mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor in order to fight the enemies that threaten the destruction of America.

The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

The tide is turning….and it begins today.  And it begins with you.
